Education was one of the very first mandates entrusted to the AFNQL, notably through a 1987 Chiefs' resolution supporting funding for the FNEC. The First Nations Education Council, which brings together eight Nations and 22 member communities, is the primary organization linked to the AFNQL in carrying out this mandate.
Its mission is to support full control of education by and for First Nations, while respecting their languages, cultures, and traditions. With its 25 schools and nearly 6,000 students, the FNEC works toward excellence, educational success, and the exercise of its members' inherent jurisdiction.
Kiuna Institution, along with the use of several ancestral languages, French, and English, reflects the richness and diversity of the communities it serves. Alongside it, Tshakapesh also plays an essential role in education, specifically for the Innu Nation, while remaining closely linked to the AFNQL.
