Our mandates - Governance
Aim for First Nations economic self-determination

"Defending our territories and First Nations rights through our own governance structures."

The very existence of the AFNQL aims to strengthen the governance exercised by Chiefs and communities, thereby consolidating the defense of their rights, self-determination, and territories.

Aim for First Nations economic self-determination
Defending the inherent right to self-government.

Defending the inherent right to self-government.

At the heart of the AFNQL's governance mandate is the recognition and implementation of the inherent right of First Nations to self-determination. This goes beyond mere administrative management; it is about defending our exclusive legislative jurisdiction over our lands, our resources, and our populations. In accordance with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), we demand that the federal and provincial governments harmonize their laws with our rights, moving from a culture of 'consultation' to one of 'free, prior, and informed consent'.
